- 第４回 インジャ･ラーさん（ニューヨーク市立大学 経済学専攻）

今回は初めての韓国人留学生のインタビューをご紹介します。 協力してくれたのはInja Ra
（インジャ･ラー）さんというニューヨーク市立大学にて 学ぶ成績優秀な学生です。 会話は英語で行われたのでそのまま掲載しますが、対訳も付け加えておきます。
・Hi, Inja, how are you ?
I'm very good.
・I really want to thank you
for coming today. （今日は来てくれて本当にありがとう）
Oh, you're very welcome. So, what do you want me to do? （どういたしまして。なにをすればいいの？）
・Well, first of all, you are
the first non- Japanese that I am going to interview, so besides
your personal reasons why you study in New York, I want to ask
you about the situation of your country. （最初に、日本人以外の人にインタビューをするのは初めてだから、ニューヨークで勉強している事のほかにあなたの国の事情も聞きたいの）
O.K. You know, I went to Canada before studying here. （いいわ。私はここにくる前にカナダに行ったのよ）
・Oh, yes? How long? （へえ。どのくらい？）
For two years. （二年間）
・What did you study there? （何を勉強したの？）
English. I went to an English institute there. It's called Mount
Royal College. （英語を。そこにある英語学校へ通ったの。名前はマウントロイヤルカレッジ）
・So the school you attended
belongs to the college？（大学に所属する学校なの？）
Yes. （そう）
・How was it? Tell me about the
school, please. Also, why did you choose Canada, why not America?
（そこはどうだった？学校について教えてくれる？それからなぜアメリカではなくてカナダを選んだの？）
Yes. The biggest reason is the money value. At that time, I
mean four years ago, Korean won was twice as strong as Canadian
dollar. And because of my personal reasons. そうね。一番の理由は貨幣価値ね。その当時、四年前になるけど、韓国のウオンはカナダドルの二倍は強かったから。それと個人的理由で）
・Do you mind if I ask your personal
reasons? （個人的理由を聞いてもいい？）
Of course not. ( laughing) Going to Canada was my dream since
I read " Anne of Green Gables" （いいわよ、もちろん。"赤毛のアン"を読んでいらい、カナダへ行くのが夢だったの）
・I love that story too! So you
decided to go there because of the book? （私もあの話は大好きなの。それが選んだ理由？）
Mostly. （大部分はね）
・Which city did you go? （どの都市へ行ったの？）
Calgary. The reason I chose the city was that it was one of
the big five cities in Canada, and I heard that there were less
Korean people compare to other cities. （カルガリー。なぜかと言うと、そこはカナダでも五大都市の一つだし、韓国人が他と比べると少ないって聞いてたから）
・I see. You don't like being
with Korean people? ( laughing ) （なるほど。韓国人達とは一緒にいるのがいやと。（笑）
I mean, I wanted to improve my speaking skill. If I spent a
lot of time with them, I wouldn't have opportunities to speak
English, you know. （というより、話す力を伸ばしたかったの。同じ国の人といると英語を話す機会もないでしょ）
・I know. But this is a difficult
point because no matter where you go, you will meet people from
your country. And of course you just cannot ignore them, right?
（分かるわ。それは難しいところよね。どこに行こうと必ず同じ国から来てる人に会うし、無視するわけにも行かない）
Exactly. （そのとおり）
・I think that if you really
want to speak and improve your English, you can get any chance
wherever you go. It depends on how much you wish. Well, where
are we? （もしも本当に英語のスピーキング力を伸ばしたいならどんな機会もつかめると思うの。どれだけ自分が望んでいるかによるんじゃない。ええと、どこまで話したっけ？）
About Calgary. （カルガリーについてよ）
・Right. Then, tell me about
the school you attended. （そうね。じゃ、通ってた学校に着いて教えて）
O.K. The school is a public school, so the tuition is not expensive
but it has good programs and high qualities. The classes are
divided in 7 levels. （オーケー。学校は公立だから授業料も高くないけど内容はいいし、質も高いの。クラスは７までのレベルがあるの）
・Which class did you belong?
（どのクラスにいたの？）
I started from level 3, and finished level 5. （３からスタートして５でやめたわ）
・And then you came to New York?
（それでニューヨークへ来た？）
Right. （そう）
・What did you basically study
at each level? What are differences among those levels? （それぞれのクラスではなにを勉強したの？クラスの違いとかはなに？）
In level 3, the focus is conversation and grammar, but in level
4 and 5, the focus is more academic writing. （レベル３では、会話と文法が主で、レベル４と５ではよりアカデミックな書き方を勉強したの）
・So what do you think? Do you
think your writing skill is improved? （それで、書く力は伸びたと思う？）
Actually, grammar and writing were easy for me at that time,
so I was bored. （実際には文法やライテイングはとても簡単に思えて退屈だった）
・I understand because Asian
students are stronger in grammar whereas weaker in speaking.
（わかるな。アジア人学生は文法には強くてその代わり会話力が弱い）
Yes, so I was more concentrated on speaking. I met a lot of
Canadian people to speak English with them. （そう。だから話すことに重点を置いたの。英語を話すためにカナダ人に会ったり）
・Oh, yes? How did you meat them?
（そうなの？どうやって？）
I went to Church. I think that Canadians are very kind to other
people, especially to foreign students. Whenever they see foreigners,
they are willing to help. That is why it is very easy to make
friends. （教会に行ったの。カナダの人達はとても親切よ。特に外国人学生には。いつでも外国人にはすすんで助けてくれるし。だから友達にもなりやすいの）
・Sounds like much nicer people
there than New Yorkers. (laughing) （ニューヨーカー達よりだいぶん親切みたいね。（笑）
Right. People are much more friendly. （そうよ。もっとフレンドリーだしね）
・Your speaking skill became
better and better because of talking to native Canadians.（カナダ人たちと話すことによって会話力も段々ついていった）
Yes. Also I didn't see many Koreans.（そう。それにそんなに韓国人達にも会わなかったしね）
・Why? I thought there were a
lot of Koreans there. （どうして？韓国人達もたくさんいたんでしょ）
Yes, of course, but I did home stay in Canadian families. （もちろん。だけどカナダ人家庭にホームステイしてたから）
・Families? How many?（何回？）
Two. The first one is a single mother and two little girls.
The second one is an old couple. I stayed there for 6 months
each. （２回。最初はシングルマザーと女の子が２人いる家庭で、次は老夫婦。半年ずつ滞在したの）
・A single mother. It is a controversial
issue. Anyway, how did you find those families? （シングルマザーか。難しい問題ね。それは置いておいて、どうやって彼らを見つけたの？）
The school introduced to me. But you can choose the family,
for example, if you don't like small children, you can go to
a family with no children, or if you don't like animals, you
can request other family. There's no problem. （学校の紹介で。でも自分でも選べるの。たとえば子供が嫌いならいない家庭とか。動物がいやなら違う家庭をリクエストできるし。問題はないわ）
・Tell me about the experience,
please. （そこでの経験を教えて）
The first family, there were two girls, 5 and 6 years old. Usually
single mothers are stressed so much, so my host mother too.
I think for her, it was not really a good situation, because
both working and raising two children by herself are very hard.
However, I enjoyed being with them. I talked about my background,
culture, and played with those kids. Besides Canadian culture,
I learned " tough love " from this single mother. （最初の家庭は５歳と６歳の女の子がいたの。シングルマザー達っていつでもストレスがいっぱいあるのよ。私のホストマザーもそうだった。彼女にとってはいい状況とは言えなかったと思う。働きながらたった一人で２人の子供を育てるって大変だもの。だけど、彼らといて楽しかった。自分の国の文化を話したり、子供たちと遊んだり。カナダの文化のほかに"タフ・ラブ"をシングルマザーから学んだわ）
・Tough love? What does it mean?
（タフ･ラブって？）
O.K. Her name is Catharine. She never lied to her children,
and never broke her promise to them even though it was really
hard to keep it. One day I just happened to see her crying.
But she never showed her tears in front of her children. Never.
（そうね。彼女の名前はキャサリンっていって、彼女は子供たちに対して一度もうそはつかないし、約束した事も絶対に破らなかった。たとえその約束を守る事が彼女にとって大変な事だとしても。彼女が泣いているところもたまたま見かけた事もあった。だけど絶対に涙を子供たちには見せたりしないの。一度だって）
・So it is called " tough love
" ? You just made them up? （それがタフ･ラブね。あなたが作った言葉？）
No, no. They exist. （違うわ。ちゃんとあるのよ。）
＊このtough loveを後から調べてみると、英英辞典に載ってました。意味は愛と厳しさを同時に持ちあわせると言うような感じです。＊
・I see. Then you stayed at this
family for 6 months and you moved to another one.（分かったわ。半年はそこにいて、また次に移ったのね）
Yes. The next one is the old couple, and they were very nice
as well. （そう。次は老夫妻で、また優しい人達だった）
・Such as?（たとえば？）
Their children lived other places so they had 2 extra rooms.
They could take care of two international students. （彼らの子供たちは別のところに住んでいたから部屋が二つ余ってて、留学生を２人面倒を見れたの）
・You had a roommate?（ルームメートがいたの？）
Yes. A Japanese girl. （日本人の女の子）
・How was the host family?（どんなホストファミリーだった？）
You know, Canadians are very educated. My host family also.
They taught not only English, but also Canadian culture. For
example, when the dinnertime, they taught me new vocabulary
and idioms, and they were very helpful for me to speak English.
Of course I introduced Korean culture too. （カナダ人は教養の高い人達で、私のホストファミリーもそうだった。彼らは英語のみならずカナダの文化も教えてくれて。夕食時なんかも、新しい単語や熟語を教えてくれた。英語を話す事にはとても助けられたし。もちろん私も韓国の文化を紹介したりね）
・You were very lucky. （それはラッキーね）
I know. For me, learning Canadian culture is more valuable than
leaning English. （そう。私にとっては英語を学ぶよりカナダの文化を学ぶほうがより価値があった）
・I think that is because you
met wonderful people, and now you have unforgettable memories.
Do you miss Canada?（それはすばらしい人達に会って、忘れられない思い出になっているからじゃない。カナダが恋しい？）
I do. I want to go there again someday. （ええ。いつかまた行きたい）
・After you spent this family
for 6 months, where did you go?（ここに半年いて、そのあとは？）
I lived by myself. （一人暮らしをしたの）
・Reasons?（理由は？）
To reduce my expense. （出費をおさえるために）
・O.K. And then you came to New
York. Why? （そう。で、ニューヨークに来た。どうして？）
Let me explain the Korean situation first. I came to New York
in the summer of 1998. We had IMF in Korea that year, so many
companies bankrupted, a lot of employees were fired, and there
were no jobs. I had two choices : going back to Korea where
there were no jobs, or keep studying at college. I decided to
stay and study. The reason I chose City University of New York
is that this school is very strong for Accounting and Finance.
Especially, Accounting is the top 11 in the United States, right?（まず韓国の事情を説明させて。ニューヨークに来たのは１９９８年の夏。その当時ＩＭＦのせいで多くの会社が倒産して、従業員達は首になって、仕事はなくなった。私は選択肢が二つあったの。仕事のない韓国へ帰るか，残って勉強するか。それで、勉強する事に決めたわ。ニューヨーク市立大学にしたのはアカウンテイングとファイナンスがとても強いって聞いたし、特にアカウンテイングは全米で１１位でしょ）
・Yes. Tough course though.（そうね。厳しいけどね。）
I thought it would be better not going back to my country. （韓国へ帰るよりもいいんじゃないかと思って）
・Was it a good decision for
you? （いい選択だった？）
I think so. Studying at college is totally different from learning
just English, however, I can feel that I gain more and more
knowledge. （そう思う。大学で勉強するって、ただ単に英語を学ぶとは全然違うけど、知識をどんどん身につけてる感じがする）
・I agree. College students are
completely different those who are in my country. American students
work hard and they have either part time or full time jobs,
so for us, to get to know them is not easy. （そうね。大学生も日本の学生達とは全然違うしね。アメリカ人学生は勉強も一生懸命するし、それにパートタイムかフルタイムで仕事も持ってて、彼らと親しくなるのは簡単じゃない）
Right. They are always busy, and we are too. ( laughing ) （そう。彼らも私たちもいつでも忙しいしね。（笑）
・O.K. Getting longer. Thanks
for today. I think I got a very good interview. If I have a
chance, I want to ask you about your life in New York next time.
（じゃ、長くなってきたから。今日はありがとう。いいインタビューだった。もしもまた機会があったら今度はニューヨークの生活について聞きたいわ）
All right. Anytime. I had fun too. （いいわよ。いつでも。楽しかったわ）
いかがでしたか？皆さんもお気づきのように私たちは会話で決して難しい単語や言いまわしを使っているわけではありません。日本では間違った言い方をしたら恥ずかしいとか、頭の中で文章を組み立てて話そうとしますが、それでは会話のテンポが崩れるだけで流れに乗れません。会話はキャッチボールのような物です。大事なのは正しい文章を作るのではなく、相手の言った事を受け止めそれに答える。少しぐらい間違ってもいいからしゃべる事が英会話上達のコツです。こちらでは沈黙は嫌われますから、言葉がうまく出てこなければ知っている単語をつなげるだけでもいいのです。とにかく何でも言ってみる。話さなければなかなかうまくなりませんから。英語を上達させたい人はどうか積極的になってください。
